Welcome to Vietnam – Where Asia’s Rarest Primates Roam

Endemic-rich, biologically unique, and increasingly recognised as one of the world’s primate-watching hotspots, Vietnam is home to 26 species of primates, including several endemic species/subspecies and many of the world’s rarest, most endangered, and visually striking monkeys, langurs, and gibbons. From the cloud forests of the north to the limestone karsts of the Annamites and the tropical lowlands of the south, Vietnam offers truly unforgettable opportunities for primate watching, conservation travel, and wildlife photography.

Long overlooked by mainstream wildlife tourism, Vietnam has become a flagship destination for primate enthusiasts, conservationists, and photographers alike. It is the only country on Earth where you can observe species such as the Tonkin Snub-nosed Monkey, Red-shanked Douc Langur, Grey-shanked Douc Langur, Delacour’s Langur, Hatinh Langur, Annamese Langur, and the Cao Vit Gibbon, all extraordinarily rare and confined to very specific forest habitats.

Where To See Vietnam's Primates

Depending on the taxonomy used, Vietnam is home to approximately 26 species of primates. Of these, 7 are classified as Critically Endangered, 9 as Endangered, and 4 as Vulnerable, making Vietnam’s primates among the rarest and most threatened in the world. As noted above, the country offers some truly spectacular primate-watching opportunities. However, it’s important to understand that not all species are currently accessible, and some are exceptionally difficult to observe in the wild. It is also imperative that visitors and tour providers in the region observe the wishes and responsibilities of local conservation groups and government organisations tasked with the protection and saving of certain species.

To assist guests keen on experiencing this extraordinary group of animals, we’ve outlined all of Vietnam’s primate species below, along with notes on their conservation status, observability, and the tours we recommend for the best chances of seeing them. Please keep in mind that most of our primate-focused and photography tours are custom-designed specifically for your interests.

Slow Lorises: Lorisinae

Pygmy Slow Loris (Xanthonycticebus pygmaeus)
Endangered and nocturnal species, difficult to see without special equipment. On our tours, we use thermal scopes to improve sightings. Relatively common across southern Vietnam, including some scattered populations resulting from released pets and the illegal wildlife trade. Best seen on our Cat Tien Wildlife ToursCan Gio Day Tour, and custom mammal tours in southern Vietnam.

Assamese Macaque (Macaca assamensis)
Probably the most difficult macaque species to observe in Vietnam. The nominative subspecies inhabits hill forests above 500m elevation throughout the Annamite Range. We target this species on our Ninh Binh Nature TourPrimates of the Karst: 9-Day Tour of Northern Vietnam, and private/custom tours.

Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta siamica)
Incredibly common, especially around Da Nang in Central Vietnam. Present in scattered locations in northern Vietnam as well. Featured on any primate tour in Central Vietnam, including our Red-shanked Douc Langur experiences.

Common Long-tailed Macaque (Macaca fascicularis fascicularis)
The grey-form mainland subspecies found throughout much of southern Vietnam. Very common and easily observed on our Cat Tien Wildlife ToursCan Gio Day Tour, and custom southern Vietnam mammal tours.

Critically Endangered and possibly on the brink of extinction, with only one or two viable populations remaining in the steep karst forests east of the Red River in northern Vietnam. Once thought extinct for over 50 years before its rediscovery. We do not currently offer tours for this species, as all known populations are under strict protection by government and conservation organisations, with no public access permitted.

Langurs: Trachypithecus

Critically Endangered and endemic to Vietnam. A limestone karst specialist with fewer than 300 individuals remaining. Best seen on our Ninh Binh Nature TourPrimates of the Karst: 9-Day Tour of Northern Vietnam, and Wild Vietnam: Rare Primates & Mammals 2-Week Expedition.

Cat Ba Langur (Trachypithecus poliocephalus)
Critically Endangered and endemic to Cat Ba Island, this species has an estimated wild population of just 80–100 individuals. The langurs are highly sensitive to disturbance, with a significant risk of infanticide triggered by stress. In accordance with Vietnamese law, it is currently illegal to operate tours that target this species. Next Continent has an ongoing relationship with the Cat Ba Langur Conservation Project (CBLCP) and fully supports their efforts to protect the species and its habitat. We do not offer tours seeking out this species, both to comply with legislation and to respect the CBLCP’s guidelines and the langur’s vulnerability.

Hatinh Langur (Trachypithecus hatinhensis)
Endangered and nearly endemic to north-central Vietnam (Quang Binh province), with limited range extending slightly into Laos. We collaborate with the Hatinh Langur Conservation Community (Cộng đồng bảo tồn Voọc Gáy Trắng) to view this species ethically. Annamese Langur (Trachypithecus margarita)
Endangered and inhabits lowland evergreen forests. Rare and difficult to see, with sightings varying by year and season.
