Cat Tien 4-Day Primate & Mammal Watching Tour

Code: CTMD04 | Categories: Mammal Watching & Primate Tours | Locations: Cat Tien National Park, Ho Chi Minh City

Summary:

Join us for one of our most specialised and complete mammal-watching experiences, a 4-Day / 3-Night in-depth expedition of Cát Tiên National Park, one of Southeast Asia’s most biodiverse lowland forests. Unlike your standard wildlife tours that only scratch the surface with the standard, easy-to-see large mammals of Cat Tien, this tour is designed for serious mammal and primate watchers and photographers looking to encounter an exceptional and biodiverse range of species, from primates to elusive small mammals, forest bats, nocturnal predators and more.

Cát Tiên is home to well over 100 recorded mammal species, including some of the rarest, most threatened, and most elusive in the region. We target a broad range of species across all major habitat types, from evergreen forest and bamboo thickets to wetlands, grasslands, and river edges, using a combination of traditional tracking, modern field techniques, as well as the latest in wildlife detection tech. The itinerary emphasises quality encounters and maximum diversity, and can be tailored to suit specific interests. Whether you’re focused on particular target species or families (primates are an often requested example), photographic opportunities, or simply aiming to record as many species as possible.

What truly sets this tour apart is our expert guiding team, advanced fieldcraft, and the use of specialised equipment and focussed targeting techniques. As with most mammal watching tours, a large amount of our field time is spent out at night, where we employ high-end thermal scopes, red-filtered spotlights, ultrasonic bat detectors, and other small mammal survey equipment for the otherwise near-impossible to see species. We also do acoustic work at known bat roosts and feeding areas, visit den sites, fig/fruit trails and mineral licks (when available) to maximise encounters with key species. Each night offers extensive field time of active spotlighting by our team with extensive field experience.

For primate specialists this is a very productive tour, with us regularly encountering 6x species including Southern Yellow-cheeked Gibbon, Black-shanked Douc Langur, Annamese Langur, Pygmy Slow Loris and the two local macaque species. Beyond primates, other regular highlights include Northern Red Muntjac, Lesser Oriental Chevrotain, Gaur, Yellow-throated Marten, Southeast Asian Palm Civet, Small Indian Civet, Small-toothed Palm Civet, Mainland Leopard Cat, Black Giant Squirrel, Common Giant Flying Squirrel, Indomalayan Long-tailed Giant Rat, East Asian Porcupine, Greater Short-nosed Fruit Bat, Grand Roundleaf Bat, Greater False Vampire Bat, Indochinese Horseshoe Bat, and Woolly Horseshoe Bat, to name a few.

A few specialist species we dedicate time to searching for include Asian Elephant, Asian Small-clawed Otter, Sunda Pangolin, Particoloured Flying Squirrel, Red-cheeked Flying Squirrel, Large-toothed Ferret Badger, Burmese Hare, Greater Bandicoot Rat, and many more.

Accommodation is at the park headquarters, featuring basic but comfortable rooms with private bathrooms, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi. Its convenient location near the park entrance allows quick access to vehicles and 24-hour park entry (ideal for very late-night spotlighting sessions). Meals are not included by default to offer flexibility for dietary preferences and self-catering, however, we’re happy to assist with restaurant orders or add meals as opinion on request.

This highly customisable, field-focused tour is designed for serious mammal and primate watchers seeking depth, diversity, and some of the best mammal-watching opportunities Vietnam has to offer. A 3-day version is also available, as well as extensions to other parks, tours or specialist species (such as Owston’s Civet, Annamite Muntjac, Delacour’s Langur, Grey-shanked Douc Langur, etc) can all be arranged upon request.

While we follow a general structure, no two tours are the same. Each day’s locations and trails are tailored to your target species, photography goals, and local conditions. This flexible, guest-focused approach consistently delivers better results, higher species counts, and a more enjoyable experience overall.

Day 1: Transfer from Ho Chi Minh City or Da Lat to Cát Tiên National Park. Your guide will manage park entry, ferry crossing, and accommodation check-in. We then begin mammal watching, focusing on key habitats and priority species. We’ll also check a number of our known daytime bat roosts. After dinner, we head out for our first night spotlighting session.

Day 2: Early morning, we travel deeper into the park, targeting areas like Crocodile Lake and old-growth forest. In the afternoon, we cover lowland forest, rapids, and open grasslands. Our second night spotlighting usually takes place in the park’s deeper areas and often involves the longest late-night session.

Day 3: This is the most flexible day, customized based on your experiences so far. Typically, we may hire a local boat to search upstream for species like Annamese Langur, Lesser Oriental Chevrotain, or Asian Small-clawed Otter. Night spotlighting follows again.

Day 4: Our final full day in the park — a last opportunity to find any missed species or revisit productive spots. After lunch, we begin the return journey to Ho Chi Minh City, Da Lat, or your next destination.

As mentioned above, Cat Tien has an impressive mammal list of over 100 species, including some exceptional rarities and a noteworthy number of Indochinese endemics. Experienced mammal watchers know that you can never get “everything”, but on a typical 4-day / 3-night tour, we can usually target around 30-50~ species.

Beyond the highlights mentioned above, a full species list is available for download at this link. If you have specific species in mind or questions about your targets, don’t hesitate to reach out. Some of the rarer mammals are seasonal or require special access, unique field approaches, or extra preparation, so the more notice we have, the better we can tailor your experience.

It’s no secret that where mammal watching is spectacular, other wildlife experiences often follow, and Cát Tiên National Park is no exception. While the park is well known for its mammals, it’s perhaps most famous for its birding opportunities and is equally notable for herping and general wildlife watching. From butterfly spotting to rare orchids and tropical invertebrates, the park offers outstanding and diverse encounters. The entire Next Continent team is trained across all major wildlife groups, so whether you want to add a bit of birding, track down a Malayan Krait, or search for rare tropical moths during your mammal-focused tour, we’re ready to help.

Conditions in Cat Tien are generally easy, though after several long days in the field (both during the day and at night), they can begin to feel moderate to challenging. The park features a network of relatively well-maintained trails and roads, making walking and biking straightforward. However, being in a tropical climate, it can get very hot and humid, and certain times of year may bring river flooding and other weather-related challenges. Throughout your tour, we’ll adapt to the best locations based on your pace, comfort, and target species.

Private tours for individuals or small groups with options for larger groups available upon request.

Hot and humid year-round. Mornings can be misty, especially during the wet season. Heavy rain is common from May to October, while the dry season from November to April brings clearer skies and more comfortable field conditions.

Cat Tien offers consistently rewarding photographic opportunities across a wide range of habitats. With a rich diversity of wildlife and generally accessible terrain, it’s a great destination for both casual and serious photographers. While conditions (and some tricky targets) can be moderately challenging in places, the park provides solid chances for capturing a variety of subjects all year round. To make the most of your time, we recommend discussing your specific goals with the Next Continent team in advance so we can tailor the experience to your interests.

The critically endangered Sunda Pangolin can be found in Cát Tiên National Park, where conservation efforts are ongoing. Save Vietnam’s Wildlife (SVW) plays a key role in rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing pangolins back into the park, as well as monitoring them with tracking transmitters.
