Ninh Binh Nature Tour: Langurs, Limestone Karst and Wetland Wonders
Code: NBSD03 | Categories: Mammal Watching & Primate Tours, Birding, Boat & River Cruises | Locations: Hanoi, Ninh Binh
Summary:
Join us on an incredible day tour to behold the natural wonders and unique, endemic wildlife of Ninh Binh Province in northern Vietnam. On this trip, we aim to showcase the natural side of Ninh Binh by searching for a diverse array of unique birdlife, clouds of subtropical butterflies, and most importantly, you’ll have a rare chance to track down one of the world’s most endangered primates, the Delacour’s Langur.
Your tour begins with a pre-dawn pick-up from your accommodation (from either Hanoi or Ninh Binh), before transferring to the extensive Van Long Wetlands area. Upon arrival, you’ll board a traditional sampan boat for a focussed cruise through the extensive limestone karst, forest and wetlands, the prime location for Delacour’s Langur, observing birds of prey, dragonflies, and experiencing wetland bird species. Keep your eyes peeled for species such as the Asian Openbill, Cotton Pygmy Goose, White-browed Crake, Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Purple Heron, Common & White-throated Kingfisher, and even the rare Bonelli’s Eagle and Greater Spotted Eagle.
Encountering the Delacour’s Langur is a privilege, as it is one of the rarest and most at-risk primates in the world. Our team works regularly with these animals and knows the best ways to observe them responsibly, ensuring great views and photography opportunities without disturbing their natural behaviour.
After the boat trip, we’ll explore a few key areas on foot, winding along hidden trails through local communes and beneath towering limestone karst mountains. We’ll follow a trail where limestone forests, wetlands, and scrublands meet, creating a rich intersection of habitats. This biodiverse zone offers excellent wildlife-watching opportunities and fascinating insights into the region’s geological and natural history. Keep an eye out for species such as the Assam Macaque, Annam Limestone Babbler, Common Picture Wing, Golden Birdwing, and occasionally even a Maritime Stripe Squirrel or two.
Before returning to your accommodation, we’ll enjoy a delicious Vietnamese lunch at a local homestay restaurant, complete with freshly brewed Vietnamese coffee.
