Birding the Imperial City: Hue Birdwatching Day Tour

Code: HUSD02 | Categories: Birding | Locations: Hue

Summary

Hue is best known for its rich imperial heritage and the enduring legacy of the Nguyen Dynasty. But beyond the ancient palaces and grand mausoleums lies a surprisingly diverse range of birdwatching opportunities. From the city itself, birders can access an array of habitats including wetlands, paddy fields, inland lakes, coastal scrub, lowland forests, and high-elevation broadleaf evergreen forests. This city is one of central Vietnam’s most underrated birding areas, where visitors can encounter everything from pratincoles, to pittas, laughingthrushes, shorebirds, owls and during peak winter season, rare Asian migrants.

For visiting birders, we offer a range of experiences including half-day, full-day, spotlighting, and fully customised outings, all of which can enjoyed during your time visiting the Imperial City. These experiences are outlined below:

Half Day Birding Experience

Our Half-Day tours are ideal for those with limited time, focusing on birding hotspots in and around the Imperial City, nearby lowland forests, and rural paddy fields. The tour begins with pick-up from your accommodation, with breakfast and coffee arranged in advance for your convenience. We then spend the morning exploring local sites and targeting as many species as possible. This option is perfect for travellers on a tight schedule, those accompanied by non-birders (such as friends, family, or colleagues) or anyone wanting a relaxed morning focused on bird photography rather than a fast-paced listing approach. We return to your accommodation around midday. Key urban target species are listed below, just scroll down the page to learn more.

Full Day Birding Tour

Our Full-Day Birding Tour is Hue’s most popular birding experience, offering the time and flexibility to explore a wide variety of habitats and significantly increase your species count. While we typically follow a set itinerary, the tour can be tailored to suit specific photography goals or target species.

The day begins at dawn, with breakfast and coffee arranged in advance for your convenience. We start by exploring rural lowlands and paddy fields on our way to the world-renowned Bach Ma National Park. There, we ascend quickly to higher elevations to focus on rare Annamite endemics and broadleaf forest specialists. After a lunch break within the park, we make our way back to Hue via the expansive lakes of An Cu Lagoon and the coastal scrub habitats along the East Vietnam Sea. Depending on the season and conditions, birders can expect to encounter anywhere from 50 to 80 species during this full-day adventure.

Spotlighting Tours

For those curious about Vietnam’s nocturnal wildlife, Hue offers excellent spotlighting opportunities both in and around the city. The tour begins with pick-up before dusk and returns approximately four hours later. Key target species include Indian Nightjar, Savanna Nightjar, Collared Scops Owl and Eastern Barn Owl. If you’re interested in more specialised forest species (Spot-bellied Eagle Owl, Hodgson’s Frogmouth, Mountain Scops Owl, etc) we recommend exploring our more specialised wildlife tours in Bach Ma National Park.

Custom Tours & Target Species

We also offer custom tours designed around specific target species. These operate much like a standard birding tour but are tailored to your individual goals, whether that’s focussing on lifers, target gin Annamite endemics, or achieving specific photography outcomes. These personalised tours are especially popular among returning birders and those looking to fill gaps in their life lists.

For those interested specifically in visiting Bach Ma National Park, particularly for the tougher Annamite specialities, we recommend checking out our Bach Ma Wildlife Tours. Get in touch for more details.

Asian Openbill are among Vietnam’s most photogenic birds, especially when gathered in large flocks. They are a frequent highlight when we visit An Cu Lagoon
