Spoon-billed Sandpiper Day Tour: Search for the World's Rarest Wader
Code: HCSD07 | Categories: Birding | Locations: Ho Chi Minh City
Summary
Experience one of the world’s top shorebird spectacles on this full-day private tour to the coastal mudflats of Tân Thành, home to enormous numbers of overwintering waders, gulls, terns, and the critically endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper.
Departing at dawn from Ho Chi Minh City, we travel a few hours south to Go Cong’s rich tidal zone. As the tides rise, vast flocks of shorebirds converge on exposed sandbanks and mudflats, offering exceptional birding and photography opportunities. With a spotting scope provided and an expert guide at your side, we’ll scan for the enigmatic “Spoony” among a sea of feeding plovers and sandpipers.
Alongside Spoon-billed Sandpiper, this area regularly hosts over 20 other shorebird species including the much sought-after Nordmann’s Greenshank (also critically endangered), as well as Grey Plover, Tibetan Sand Plover, Greater Sand Plover, Kentish Plover, White-faced Plover, Whimbrel, Far Eastern Curlew, Eurasian Curlew, Bar-tailed & Black-tailed Godwit, Asian Dowitcher, Terek Sandpiper, Common Redshank, Great Knot, Broad-billed Sandpiper, and many more. Outside of shorebirds, we also record a healthy variety of coastal and mangrove specialists such as Ashy Tailorbird, Mangrove Whistler, Plain-backed Sparrow, Oriental Skylark, Malaysian Pied Fantail and more.
This all-inclusive day trip is designed for serious birders and wildlife photographers seeking an unforgettable encounter with some of Asia’s rarest shorebirds.

Climate & Weather Conditions
Go Cong experiences a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry season, from December to April, brings warm and relatively stable weather, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 33°C. During this period, the air is less humid, and mornings and evenings can feel pleasantly cool, especially near the coast. The wet season, from May to November, sees higher humidity and frequent rainfall, often in the form of short, intense downpours. Temperatures remain warm, usually between 26°C and 34°C, but the combination of heat and humidity can make the conditions feel particularly sultry.

Photography Opportunites & Notes
Excellent bird photography opportunities are available throughout the tour, and we highly recommend bringing a camera. The main challenge can be distance, especially when shorebirds move further out across the mudflats on a falling tide. We dedicate many hours to carefully working these areas to ensure the best possible views and photo opportunities. Telephoto lenses of 600mm or more often produce outstanding results, though 300–500mm lenses are typically sufficient. Serious photographers may also wish to bring a tripod and wear clothing they don’t mind getting a bit muddy.
