Son Tra Butterfly Walks

Code: DNSD05 | Categories: Butterfly Watching, Easy Nature Tours / Wildlife for Everyone | Locations: Da Nang / Hoi An

Summary:

The Son Tra Nature Reserve is a spectacular coastal forest and low-elevation peninsula rich in biodiversity. Home to an extraordinary variety of tropical butterflies, this lush landscape also supports a remarkable array of birds, mammals, plants, and other wildlife, including rare Vietnamese and Indochinese endemics, migrants, and coastal vagrants. Thanks to its diverse flora and coastal climate, Son Tra has become one of Vietnam’s most celebrated butterfly-watching destinations.

Drawing on years of field experience, we’ve crafted an immersive half-day tour that showcases the very best of Son Tra’s Lepidoptera. This tour is perfect for serious butterfly enthusiasts, families, travellers, and nature lovers alike, offering a unique opportunity to witness the dazzling variety of tropical species that inhabit the peninsula.

The experience begins shortly after dawn with a complimentary pick-up from your accommodation in Da Nang or Hoi An, followed by a brief breakfast and coffee stop en route to the reserve. Once in the forest, we’ll explore our favourite trails, selected based on seasonal flowering, local conditions and recent sightings.

To maximise sightings, we deploy tried-and-tested butterfly lures, such as fermented sugar water, rotting fruit, even a splash of beer (yes, butterflies love beer!) at targeted locations along the way. While the lures do their work, we guide you on a gentle walk through rich butterfly habitats, pausing to observe activity at flowering bushes, puddling spots, and sunny glades. Later, we return to check what’s been drawn to our lures for close-up viewing and photography.

The tour wraps up by late morning with a return transfer to your accommodation. For more dedicated Lepidopterists, we also offer a full-day extension, doubling the lure sites and habitat types, which typically increases the number of species observed by up to 30-40%.

Travel options include a comfortable vehicle, this is ideal for families and a relaxed experience, or a more adventurous motorbike ride with our expert guides, allowing access to remote and rugged areas of the peninsula.

In addition to butterflies, Son Tra offers chances to see a host of other wildlife. Keep watch for the critically endangered Red-shanked Douc Langur, tropical birds, reptiles, dragonflies, scorpions, freshwater crabs, and more. Whether you’re a passionate naturalist or simply curious to see Vietnam’s vibrant wildlife, this tour offers a rewarding and unforgettable glimpse into the biodiversity of Son Tra.

Add-on Experience: Moths After Dark

One of the most immersive ways to explore the world of nocturnal insects is through the time-tested practice of using a moth sheet. This simple yet very productive setup involves a large white sheet strung between trees or mounted on a stand, illuminated by a strong torch or specialised LED light. As night falls, a dazzling array of moths and other night-active insects (beetles, cicadas, mantises, lacewings, hoppers, stick insects, and more) are attracted in from the surrounding forest.

In Vietnam’s tropical lowlands, this method can be extraordinarily productive. It has become a favourite technique among both visiting biologists and local Lepidoptera enthusiasts. At Next Continent, we’re proud to be the only tour company currently offering this experience, and it has quickly become a highlight of our nocturnal outings.

To ensure the best possible sightings, we use the cutting-edge LepiLED system, developed by Dr. Gunnar Brehm. This world-class device features eight Nichia Power LEDs calibrated to match the three peak light sensitivity ranges of most nocturnal insects—UV, blue, and green. Four of these LEDs emit at 365 nm (UV), which is invisible to humans but highly attractive to moths and many other insects.

If you’re keen to extend your experience and witness Son Tra’s nocturnal biodiversity at its most spectacular, we can easily add a moth sheet session to your itinerary. On a good night, hundreds of species and thousands of individuals may appear, offering exceptional opportunities for observation, photography, and appreciation of Vietnam’s rich insect fauna.

A common photography technique is to place vibrant colours or flowers behind butterflies while they’re “puddling” to add an extra splash of colour or texture to the shot.

Target & Highlight Species Summary

Due to inconsistent survey efforts over the years, the true number of butterfly species on Son Tra remains somewhat uncertain. However, based on our tours, along with records from iNaturalist and other citizen science platforms, we estimate that around 230 species have been recorded here, an impressive total that highlights the rich biodiversity of the peninsula. For a complete list of our records, please download the checklist below.

As with butterflies, the total number of moth species on Son Tra remains unclear and is even less well understood. However, our moth sheeting efforts, along with surveys by local community and education groups, suggest there are easily several hundred species present. Many of these are poorly known, and some may not yet be formally described. To date, we have recorded approximately 170~ species during our sheeting nights.
