Summary:

Join Next Continent’s signature Vietnam Birding Walks for a relaxed morning of urban birding at the Ha Noi Botanical Gardens, right in the heart of Vietnam’s capital.

With mature trees, ponds, gardens and pockets of dense vegetation, the Botanical Gardens support a varied mix of resident and migratory birds. The site also serves as an important stopover for birds moving through Ha Noi. During migration, visiting songbirds, flycatchers, thrushes, and warblers may appear alongside the gardens’ regular residents, adding an element of the unexpected to the birding experience.

Meet your expert local birding guide at the gardens in the early morning before exploring the trails and green spaces at a relaxed pace.

We will follow the morning bird activity, check productive migrant trap areas and see what may have arrived overnight. There is no fixed species list, which is part of what makes these Ha Noi Birding Walks so enjoyable. Different seasons bring different birds, giving visiting birders and local nature lovers a reason to return.

The walks have a friendly, local and community-focused atmosphere. You can ask questions, learn bird calls, practice identification, take photographs and share sightings with other nature lovers. At the end of the morning, we will review the species recorded and complete a digital bird checklist.

Our Vietnam Birding Walks operate in cities and communities across the country, helping birders, families, travellers, photographers and curious beginners experience the birds of Vietnam with knowledgeable local guides. Frequently Asked Questions

Who are the Vietnam Birding Walks suitable for?

Our Birding Walks are suitable for beginners, experienced birders, families/children, photographers, tourists and general nature lovers of all ages!

Ha Noi Botanical Gardens supports a wonderful mix of resident and seasonal birdlife. On a typical walk, we hope to encounter local favourites such as Oriental Magpie-Robin, Asian Palm Swift, White-throated Fantail, Japanese Tit, Swinhoe’s White-eye, and Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker, alongside a changing selection of migrants and passing species.

More than 150 species have been recorded at the site, which has become an increasingly important migrant hotspot for Ha Noi’s local birding and photography community. New and unusual species continue to be recorded as more birders explore the gardens, particularly during migration.

A typical morning walk records around 20–30 species, depending on the season, weather, and bird activity. During migration periods, the gardens can be especially exciting, at a hotspot like this, you never quite know what might turn up.

You can explore recent sightings and the complete species list on the eBird Ha Noi Botanical Gardens hotspot.

You don’t need any specialist equipment to join our Birding Walks. If you have binoculars or a camera, we recommend bringing them along, but they’re certainly not essential to enjoy the experience.

We recommend wearing comfortable outdoor clothing and good walking shoes, and bringing drinking water and any personal essentials you may need for a few hours outdoors.

A limited number of binoculars may also be available to borrow on request, on a first-come, first-served basis. Please let us know when booking if you would like to request a pair.

Our Birding Walks are open group experiences, so you may find yourself birding one-on-one with your guide or joined by a small group of fellow travellers, birders, and nature lovers.

To keep the experience relaxed and enjoyable, we typically limit each walk to a maximum of around 10 guests. The small-group format is part of the experience, creating a friendly, community-style atmosphere while still allowing plenty of time with your guide.

Once you’ve booked your place, we’ll send you an email with the exact meeting location, a map to help you find us, and your guide’s contact number for the morning. We usually meet at the main entrance to the Botanical Gardens, although this can occasionally change, so please check your confirmation email before setting out.

Once everyone has arrived, your guide will give a quick introduction to the gardens, what species you might expect at that time of year, any interesting recent sightings, and ask if anyone has particular birds they’re hoping to find. Then it’s time to start birding! We’ll spend around 2–2.5 hours walking through the gardens at a relaxed pace, stopping regularly to watch, identify, photograph, and talk about the birds we encounter. The walking is easy and suitable for most visitors.

At the end of the walk, we’ll finish with a Bird Call, tally up the morning’s sightings, and wrap up the official tour. Anyone who would like to stick around for a coffee and continue chatting with the group is very welcome (and encouraged!).

Like all Next Continent experiences, we may postpone or cancel a walk if weather conditions are unsuitable for either safety or the quality of the experience. This may include extreme heat, strong winds, storms, or heavy rain.

However, a little rain doesn’t stop us! If conditions are safe and we’re only expecting light or occasional rain, the walk will usually go ahead and the birding can still be excellent.

At the end of the walk, your guide will lead a Bird Call, bringing the group together to review and record all the species encountered that morning.

After the tour, you’ll receive a completed digital bird checklist of your sightings. If you use eBird, the checklist can also be shared directly with your eBird account, making it easy to add the morning’s records to your personal list.

Yes! Our Vietnam Birding Walks are available in several locations across the country, including Ha Noi, Da Nang, Hoi An, and Ho Chi Minh City. Each walk explores a different local habitat and bird community, making them a great way to experience some birding and nature as you travel through Vietnam.
