Join us on our expert-led after-dark adventure to discover the owls, nightjars and other nocturnal wildlife of Da Nang! Perfect for birders, wildlife photographers, nature lovers and families, this tour offers the chance to encounter some of Vietnam’s rarely seen nocturnal species, specialising in owls and nightjars, but also a nice variety of other mammals, reptiles, frogs and insects!

Your evening begins with pick-up from your accommodation in Da Nang or Hoi An just before dusk. Travel is by comfortable private vehicle as standard, making it ideal for families, groups and photographers carrying equipment. For those seeking a little more adventure, a motorbike option is also available. We recommend having dinner beforehand or bringing a few snacks to enjoy during the outing. Every tour is different, but we typically visit a combination of two or three habitats, including evergreen forest, scrubland, limestone karst and coastal dunes.

Our four key target species are Indian Nightjar, Savanna Nightjar, Collared Scops Owl and Eastern Barn Owl. On rare occasions, we have also recorded the much rarer Oriental Scops Owl, Brown Boobook and even Spot-bellied Eagle Owl, so you never know what may appear! Birders and photographers with particular photography targets are encouraged to let us know in advance so we may best skew your tour experience.

You’ll be accompanied by an experienced guide and equipped with professional spotlighting equipment, including white and red torches and headlamps for safe and respectful wildlife viewing. While flash photography is not permitted, photographers can work with our team to capture stunning, well-lit images using white light when appropriate. Beyond the birds, bonus wildlife can include Asian Painted Frog, Spot-legged Tree Frog, Golden Tree Snake, White-lipped Pit Viper, Pantropical Huntsman Spider, Tropical Swallowtail Moth, Javan Pipistrelle and maybe even the elusive Mainland Leopard Cat!

Itinerary Overview

Duration: Approximately 3–4 hours (typically 6:00 pm – 9:30 pm)

Every tour is tailored to local conditions, the season, recent wildlife activity, and your accommodation location. As a result, no two evenings are exactly the same. We adjust the route throughout the night to maximise wildlife encounters and photographic opportunities, rather than following a rigid itinerary. Depending on conditions, we typically visit a combination of evergreen forest, scrubland and limestone karst habitats, and occasionally coastal dunes or beach scrub. The order and amount of time spent at each location varies depending on where recent sightings have been and what species are most active.

A typical evening may include:

Dusk departure from your accommodation and transfer to the lower slopes of the Son Tra Peninsula, searching for species such as Collared Scops Owl, Large-tailed Nightjar and passage forest owls
Continue to the limestone karst scrublands area, where we search for Indian Nightjar, Savanna Nightjar, Collared Scops Owl, and Eastern Barn Owl.
If Indian Nightjar has not yet been located, we may finish the evening by exploring coastal scrub and beach habitats on the way back to your hotel.

Throughout the tour, our guides continuously adapt the itinerary based on recent sightings and local conditions, ensuring the best possible chance of encountering the region’s nocturnal wildlife. Tour Pace

This easy and accessible tour is suitable for everyone, from children, older adults, photographers with heavy gear and everyone in between. Each outing is different, with visits to several locations, all involving minimal walking on mostly flat, well-maintained tracks and surfaces. As with any nocturnal activity, walking in the dark can make tripping more likely, so we recommend taking your time and wearing sturdy, comfortable footwear.

Photography Opportunites & Notes

This tour offers excellent opportunities to photograph owls and nightjars, whether you’re using a professional camera setup or simply a smartphone. For those primarily interested in nocturnal birds, we recommend a telephoto lens of at least 400mm. However, in low-light conditions, a shorter telephoto lens (around 250–400mm) with a faster maximum aperture can often produce even better results.

Guests hoping to photograph reptiles, amphibians and insects should consider bringing a dedicated macro lens. If these groups are your primary interest, we would recommend one of our specialist herping or insect photography tours, which provide far greater opportunities for close-up photography. That said, if your main focus is owls, most modern smartphones are more than capable of capturing excellent photos of the incidental reptiles, amphibians and insects we encounter along the way.

My wife and I joined the Da Nang After Dark Spotlighting Tour. As we are interested in birds, we told the guide our expectations before the tour began. During the trip, the guide took full care of our needs and spent the night in looking for the nightjars and owls. The guide was very experienced and had good knowledge of where the birds were. We got the Indian Nightjar and Collared Scops Owl with not much difficulties. But we did not have luck on finding the Eastern Barn Owl during the first several attempts. The guide decided to drive further north , and eventually we saw 2 of them. Both the Indian nightjar, Collared Scops Owl and Eastern Barn Owl are our lifers. A fantastic job by the guide!
