Birding Tours with Next Continent

Vietnam’s vast and fertile Mekong Delta may be best known for its floating markets, endless rice fields, and iconic river life, but for birders, it is one of the richest and most diverse regions in the country. With over 400 bird species recorded, the delta encompasses an extraordinary mosaic of habitats, from expansive freshwater wetlands and flooded grasslands to tidal mudflats, mangrove forests, and coastal reserves. These habitats make the region a magnet for both resident and migratory species, with seasonal bird counts on day tours regularly topping 100 species and often more.

Among the delta’s standout locations, Tram Chim National Park is the undisputed top hotspot. This Ramsar-listed wetland spans over 7,000 hectares and plays host to immense flocks of waterbirds, including the endangered Sarus Crane, which winters here during the dry season. A key highlight here is being able to experience the park by boat, with daily sunrise or sunset boat trips through the wetlands, flooded lotus fields and through the melaleuca swamps. Key species here include both Cotton Pygmy Goose, Greater & Lesser Adjutant, Painted Stork, Asian Golden Weaver, Large-tailed Nightjar, both Pheasant-tailed and Bronze-winged Jacana, Blue-eared Kingfisher, Chestnut-tailed Starling, Brown-throated Sunbird and many more. Our signature Wild Mekong: 3-Day Birding Expedition is the best way to experience this spectacular location.

Along the coast, Tan Thanh Beach at Go Cong is among Vietnam’s best shorebird sites and a globally important stopover for the critically endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper and Nordmann’s Greenshank. Further inland and close to the Cambodian border, Tra Su Nature Reserve offers some great day birding within extensive melaleuca forests and swamp channels. The highlight here is one of Vietnam’s biggest heronries, featuring thousands of Little Egret, Eastern Cattle Egret, Javan Pond Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron, Asian Openbill, Oriental Darter, and on rare occasions, Milky Stork.

At Next Continent, we operate a select but specialised range of birding and photography experiences throughout the Mekong Delta. Our signature options include the Wild Mekong: 3-Day Birding Expedition to Tram Chim National Park, the Spoon-billed Sandpiper Day Tour, and a 3-day Indochinese Silver Langur Photography Expedition that combines rare primate encounters with excellent birding. The delta also forms the first leg of our popular Kingfishers of Vietnam Photography Tour, with multiple species photographed in just a few days. Whether you’re seeking a single-day shorebird trip, a focused photography expedition, or a custom multi-day circuit across the delta, we tailor every journey to match your interests, schedule, and pace.

With its astonishing biodiversity and proximity to Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta offers one of Southeast Asia’s most rewarding (and often overlooked) birding experiences. Join us and uncover the wonder of Vietnam’s greatest river.

Watercocks are striking rails found in marshes, rice paddies, and grassy swamps. They’re most active at dawn and dusk, when their loud croaking calls echo during the breeding season. Sightings like this are common, as they often flush from dense grasses, especially on our boat cruises in Tram Chim National Park
