Ninh Binh Nature Tour: Langurs, Limestone Karst and Wetland Wonders

Tour Code: NB0102

Summary

Join us on an incredible day tour to behold the natural wonders and unique, endemic wildlife of Ninh Binh Province in northern Vietnam. On this trip, we aim to showcase the natural side of Ninh Binh by exploring a diverse array of unique birdlife, clouds of subtropical butterflies and the towering limestone karst mountains up close. You’ll also have the rare chance to track down one of the world’s most endangered primates, the Delacour’s Langur. This tour is perfect for individuals, small groups and families seeking to experience the natural beauty of northern Vietnam and encounter the remarkable wildlife that calls this biodiverse region home.

Your tour begins with a pre-dawn pick-up from your accommodation, ensuring you arrive in the heart of the Red River Delta early, before the day gets too hot. At this hour, the golden light casts stunning views across the reserve, offering spectacular photo opportunities.

Upon arrival, your specialist guide will lead you through the towering limestone karst mountains, along hidden trails, and through local communes to our secret Delacour’s Langur viewing spots. Here, you’ll spend time searching for this critically endangered primate among the cliffs, wetlands and limestone forests. Encountering the Delacour’s Langur is a privilege, as it is one of the rarest and most at-risk primates in the world. Our team works regularly with these animals and knows the best ways to observe them responsibly, ensuring great views and photography opportunities without disturbing their natural behaviour.

After marvelling at these incredible animals, we’ll guide you to the largest section of the wetlands, often referred to as an “inland bay” due to its vast size. Here, you’ll board a traditional sampan boat for a tranquil journey through the wetlands and rivers, getting up-close encounters with a wide variety of waterbirds, dragonflies, and other wetland species. Keep your eyes peeled for species such as the Asian Openbill, Cotton Pygmy Goose, White-browed Crake, Pheasant-tailed Jacana, and Purple Heron, among many, many others.

Finally, you’ll return to the base of the limestone karst mountains for a walk along a trail where the mountains, limestone forests, wetlands, and scrublands converge. This biodiverse intersection offers excellent wildlife-watching opportunities while providing fascinating insights into the region’s geological and natural history. Keep a lookout for species such as the Assam Macaque, Annam Limestone Babbler, Common Picture Wing dragonfly, Bonelli’s Eagle, Golden Birdwing butterfly, Yellow-spotted Keelback, and even the Scaly-bellied Tree Lizard!

Before returning to your accommodation, we’ll take you to a local restaurant where you’ll enjoy a delicious, traditional Vietnamese lunch accompanied by freshly brewed Vietnamese coffee.

This tour offers an intimate exploration of the stunning natural history of Ninh Binh Province, featuring the dramatic limestone karst mountains that rise majestically from the wetlands and forests. These formations, shaped over millions of years, tell a story of ancient seas and geological transformation. The wetlands that surround the karst limestone, form a unique ecosystem that supports an extraordinary array of plant life and diverse wildlife.

Over the years, this area has recorded an impressive number of bird species including many rarities and near-endemics. Some of most regularly encountered and targeted include: Garganey, Northern Shoveler, Green-winged Teal, Eurasian Moorhen, Grey-headed Swamphen, White-browed Crake, White-breasted Waterhen, Black-winged Stilt, Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Little Grebe, Asian Openbill, Black Bittern, Cinnamon Bittern, Yellow Bittern, Grey Heron, Purple Heron, Crested Serpent Eagle, Bonelli’s Eagle, Eastern Marsh Harrier, Common Kingfisher, White-throated Kingfisher, Eurasian Kestrel, Zitting Cisticola, Black-browed Reed Warbler, Dusky Crag Martin, Annam Limestone Babbler, Crested Myna, Blue Whistling Thrush, Siberian Rubythroat, Blue Rock Thrush, Siberian Stonechat, Amur Stonechat, White Wagtail and Paddyfield Pipit.

The highlight mammal of this experience is undoubtedly the Delacour’s Langur. Other potential mammal sightings include the Assam Macaque, Pallas’ Squirrel, Northern Treeshrew, Water Buffalo, Asian House Shrew, and feral populations of Feral Goat, which is considered a local delicacy.

Various reptiles are occasionally encountered on our tours, though like most herping tours in Vietnam, it is typically more productive to go out at night. However, diurnal possibilities include Yellow-spotted Keelback, Scale-bellied Tree Lizard, Longtail Mabuya, Common Sun Skink and Asian House Gecko.

Beyond birds, mammals and herps, this location has an extraordinary collection of smaller life including butterflies, dragonflies and more. A few possible highlight species include the following:

Dragonflies: Common Picture Wing, Golden Flangetail, Ditch Jewel, Eastern Lilysquatter, Slender Skimmer, Scarlet Adjutant, Scarlet Basker

Butterflies: Yellow Coster, Common Jay, Golden Birdwing, Orange Tiger, Lemon Pansy, Red Helen Swallowtail, Grey Pansy, Painted Jezebel, Common Bluebottle, Spangle Swallowtail, White Dragontail Butterfly and Club Silverline

Easy to Moderate. Mainly well-maintained paths for reasonably easy walking. Occasionally wet and muddy underfoot, so good outdoor shoes is always recommended. Tour does include a boat trip on the wetlands.
