Discover Bạch Mã National Park: Waterfalls, Wildlife and Wonders of Central Vietnam

Bạch Mã National Park is one of Vietnam’s and Indochina’s most celebrated national parks, renowned for its rich biodiversity and diverse ecosystems. The park is characterized by lush tropical evergreen forests, montane forests, cloud forests, grasslands, and riparian habitats. These habitats are home to hundreds of rare plant and animal species, some of which are endemic to the region. Nestled within the Annamite Mountains, Bạch Mã’s verdant forests, impressive waterfalls, and glittering streams create a picturesque and pristine natural environment. For these reasons—and many more—it is one of our favorite and most visited locations on our Next Continent tours.

The Majestic Waterfalls of Bạch Mã National Park

One of the highlights of Bạch Mã National Park is its stunning waterfalls. The most popular and frequently visited is the Đỗ Quyên Waterfall. Standing at just under 1,000 feet (approximately 300 meters) tall, it is one of the most impressive waterfalls in central Vietnam and flows year-round. Its clear cascades tumble over a series of rocky ledges, creating a breathtaking visual display that attracts photographers and nature lovers alike. The name “Đỗ Quyên” refers to the Rhododendron flowers that bloom around the waterfall, specifically the species Rhododendron simsii. These flowers, also known as Red Azalea, burst into vibrant pink and red hues along the trails leading from the main road to the waterfall in spring (March-May).

Another notable waterfall is the Ngu Ho Waterfall, also known as the Five Lakes Waterfall. It is named for its five distinct cascades that plunge into a stunning, crystal-clear pool at the bottom of the gully. This spot is perfect for swimming and even for morning wildlife watching—keep an eye out for the Slaty-backed Forktail.

The Summit: A Rewarding Climb

Reaching the summit of Bạch Mã requires navigating winding and steep trails, but the reward is a magnificent view of the surrounding landscape. On clear days, visitors can see the city of Huế and the eastern coastline, making the climb a worthwhile adventure. During this final walk, keep an eye out for Silver Pheasants, Rufous-throated Partridges, Red-shanked Douc Langurs, and, in some of the old buildings and cave entrances, the Intermediate Horseshoe Bat.

Cultural and Historical Significance

Bạch Mã is not only valuable for its natural beauty but also holds significant cultural and historical importance. The area played a strategic role in historical conflicts, and remnants of past wars can still be found. During the Vietnam War, the park served as a strategic military base, and relics from this period are still visible within the park. These historical sites offer visitors a glimpse into the region’s past and its strategic importance. Exploring these relics and learning about the park’s history through local legends adds a historical dimension to any visit.

The Wildlife of Bạch Mã

As visitors trek through the forest, they may encounter a diverse array of wildlife, including birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and unique insect life. Everything from primates to pittas to pit vipers to planarians can be found within the park. The park’s elevation creates a range of microclimates that support various types of vegetation and wildlife. For birders and mammal watchers, Bạch Mã is a key location in Vietnam, offering the opportunity to connect with some of the region’s most unique species, such as the Northern Yellow-cheeked Gibbon, Small-toothed Ferret Badger, Annamite Muntjac, Red-shanked Douc Langur, Mountain Fulvetta, Red-headed Trogon, Silver Pheasant, Ratchet-tailed Treepie, and Hodgson’s Frogmouth, to name a few.

Culinary Delights at Đỗ Quyên Restaurant

The Đỗ Quyên restaurant in Bạch Mã is a hidden gem, celebrated for its authentic Vietnamese cuisine. Nestled at the top of the mountain gully that leads to Ngu Ho Waterfall, it is the perfect place to relax and take in the marvels of this region while enjoying a bite to eat. Guests can savor a variety of traditional dishes, from aromatic pho and crispy spring rolls to rich and savory braised pork. Visitors should note that the restaurant (and its associated accommodation) is not open every day, so coordinating with a tour operator like Next Continent is the best way to ensure availability.
