Summary:

Join us for a full-day birding journey that highlights the remarkable variety of habitats surrounding Hanoi, from the extensive wetlands and dramatic limestone karsts of Ninh Binh to the productive scrublands of the Red River Delta. Designed for visiting birders with limited time, this tour combines two of northern Vietnam’s richest birding areas in a single rewarding day.

The day begins with a pre-dawn departure from Hanoi, arriving at the scenic Van Long Wetlands in Ninh Binh at first light. Here, we take a private boat cruise through the waterways flanked by towering limestone cliffs, prime habitat for Bonelli’s Eagle, Annam Limestone Babbler, rare winter ducks, Dusky Crag Martin, as well as the endangered Delacour’s Langur, one of world’s rarest primates. The surrounding karst forests also host specialties such as Limestone Leaf Warbler, Blue Whistling Thrush, Crimson Sunbird, Olive-backed Pipit, and more.

After a relaxed brunch or early lunch in Ninh Binh, we travel back toward Hanoi for an afternoon birding session at Banana Island and nearby areas of the Red River Delta. This mosaic of wetlands, scrub, and farmland offers a distinct change in birdlife, with possibilities including Black-naped Oriole, Yellow-bellied Prinia, Pied Kingfisher, and seasonal migrants like Bluethroat, Siberian Rubythroat, and Yellow-breasted Bunting (Critically Endangered).

By late afternoon, we’ll wrap up an exceptional day that spans Vietnam’s limestone wetlands to its lowland floodplains, a true “best of both worlds” experience for dedicated birders. For those after a little extra, link up with our Hanoi After Dark: Owls & Nightjars Spotlighting Tour, targeting Australasian Grass Owl, Grey Nightjar and more.

Featuring our expert bird guide, private transport, all meals, spotting scope, and a detailed eBird checklist, this signature Hanoi birding experience is perfectly balanced, expertly guided, and ideal for maximizing your species list in a single day.

This tour is conducted at an easy to moderate pace, suitable for both relaxed walkers, bird listers, and photographers. Most of our route follows reasonably flat, well-maintained tracks, though we also spend time walking through forest, scrublands, occasionally muddy areas, and wetlands/agriculture areas, as well as small boat when on the wetlands cruise.

The greater Ha Noi region is a bird-rich area of Northern Vietnam, offering a wide range of target species and exciting possibilities, especially during migration periods and the winter season. The Bonelli’s Eagle is a very rare resident of Vietnam. Preferring forested limestone karst outcrops in the lowlands, our tour has become one of the most reliable ways to see this otherwise elusive species.
