Summary:

Join us for a full-day birding adventure showcasing the very best of Hanoi’s birding diversity, from the cool montane forests of Ba Vi National Park to the scrublands and agricultural land of Banana Island of the Red River Delta. Designed for visiting birders with limited time, this itinerary captures two of northern Vietnam’s most productive habitats in a single rewarding day.

The tour begins with a pre-dawn departure from Hanoi, arriving at Ba Vi National Park at dawn. This lush and expansive forest landscape is home to a wealth of northern specialties, including Great Barbet, Grey Treepie, Silver-breasted Broadbill, Mountain Tailorbird, Golden Babbler, Grey-throated Babbler, White-crowned Forktail, Fire-breasted Flowerpecker as well as the highly sought-after Rufous-cheeked Laughingthrush, among many others. Our morning session focuses on mid-elevation trails and forest edges, areas rich in both diversity and photographic potential.

After a relaxed lunch at a local restaurant near the park, we return to Hanoi and continue birding through the afternoon at Banana Island, a unique river island within the Red River Delta. Here, wetlands, scrub, and farmland support an entirely different community of species such as Black-naped Oriole, Grey-throated Martin, Claudia’s Leaf Warbler, Manchurian Bush Warbler, Pied Kingfisher and seasonal migrants like Bluethroat, Siberian Rubythroat, and Yellow-breasted Bunting (critically endangered).

By late afternoon, we’ll wrap up an exceptional day that spans Vietnam’s northern forests to its lowland floodplains, a true “best of both worlds” experience for dedicated birders. For those after a little extra, link up with our Hanoi After Dark: Owls & Nightjars Spotlighting Tour, targeting Australasian Grass Owl, Grey Nightjar and more.

Featuring our expert bird guide, private transport, spotting scope, all meals, and detailed eBird checklist, this is a signature Hanoi birding tour, perfectly balanced, expertly guided, and ideal for maximizing your species list in a single day.

This tour is conducted at an easy to moderate pace, suitable for both relaxed walkers, bird listers, and photographers. Most of our route follows reasonably flat, well-maintained tracks, though we also spend time walking through forest, scrublands, occasionally muddy areas, and wetlands/agriculture areas.

The greater Ha Noi region is a bird-rich area of Northern Vietnam, offering a wide range of target species and exciting possibilities, especially during migration periods and the winter season.
