Grey-shanked Douc Langur: 1-Day Primate Tour
Code: DNSD12 | Categories: Mammal Watching & Primate Tours | Locations: Da Nang / Hoi An
Summary:
The Grey-shanked Douc Langur (Pygathrix cinerea) is one of the rarest and most threatened primates on Earth. Endemic to Vietnam’s Central Highlands, this striking species is critically endangered, with only a few remaining strongholds in remote and restricted-access forest. This one-day expedition offers a rare opportunity to encounter these elusive langurs in their natural habitat, guided by our expert primate team and local conservation rangers dedicated to their protection.
Designed for serious wildlife watchers, photographers, and naturalists, this tour is a field-based experience that supports conservation while providing a chance to observe one of the world’s most sought-after primates in the wild.
Tour Itinerary:
Early Morning – Depart Da Nang / Hoi An
We depart quite early before dawn and travel south to the remote forests near Tam Ky, home to one of the most significant populations of Grey-shanked Douc Langurs. Breakfast is provided en route and lunch is purchased in advance to enjoy later in the field
Morning – Into Langur Territory
Upon arrival, we meet with our local conservation partners and ranger team. Access to this protected area is restricted, but made possible through our ongoing collaboration with local authorities. We travel by motorbike or on foot into a vast area of private forest and highland farmland, entering the core langur zone by only a few hours after dawn.
Midday to Early Afternoon – Observation and Photography
With the help of expert local trackers and our own expert guiding team, we search for and observe family groups of Grey-shanked Douc Langurs. These encounters are always conducted at a respectful distance, using ethical wildlife-watching practices. The forested ridges offer spectacular scenery and excellent opportunities for photography and quiet observation.
Afternoon – Return and Conservation Support
After our time in the field, we return to meet with the ranger team, thank them for their efforts, and contribute directly to their ongoing protection work. We then begin the journey back north, arriving in Da Nang or Hoi An by evening.
Tour Pace & Fitness
This tour requires moderate fitness and a strong interest in field-based wildlife observation. While sightings can never be guaranteed, our success rate to date has been an impressive 100%, thanks to expert local support and regular pre-tour scouting.
Key Target Species
The major target for this tour is undoubtedly the Grey-shanked Douc Langur, however, we have also recorded several excellent bird species during our visits. For those interested in birds, our guiding team will complete an eBird checklist as part of the tour.
Group Size
This is a private tour designed for individuals or small groups. We can comfortably accommodate up to six participants, though for the best experience, we strongly recommend splitting into two smaller groups to ensure more intimate, high-quality primate encounters.
Photography Opportunites & Notes
This is a specialist tour experience designed specifically for wildlife photographers and dedicated wildlife watchers. With years of field refinement, this tour has become highly focused on delivering exceptional opportunities to photograph our target species in the wild.
For serious primate photographers, we recommend a telephoto lens of 600mm or more, ideally mounted on a lightweight, portable, and sturdy tripod. However, excellent results can still be achieved with more versatile gear, all images on this page were taken using a standard 100–400mm lens.
If you’re unsure what equipment to bring, or would like tailored advice based on your gear and shooting style, feel free to contact our expert team, we’re always happy to help you prepare for the best possible photographic experience.
