Depending on the taxonomy used, Vietnam is home to approximately 26 species of primates. Of these, 7 are classified as Critically Endangered, 9 as Endangered, and 4 as Vulnerable, making Vietnam\u2019s primates among the rarest and most threatened in the world. As noted above, the country offers some truly spectacular primate-watching opportunities. However, it’s important to understand that not all species are currently accessible, and some are exceptionally difficult to observe in the wild. It is also imperative that visitors and tour providers in the region observe the wishes and responsibilities of local conservation groups and government organisations tasked with the protection and saving of certain species.<\/p>

Pygmy Slow Loris (Xanthonycticebus pygmaeus)<\/strong>
Endangered and nocturnal species, difficult to see without special equipment. On our tours, we use thermal scopes to improve sightings. Found mainly in the southern half of Vietnam since X. intermedius<\/em>\u00a0was officially described. Best tours for this species include our Pygmy Slow Loris Adventure<\/em>, various mammal and nocturnal experiences in Cat Tien National Park<\/a>, the Primates of Central Vietnam: 7-Day Expedition<\/em>, and private tours<\/a>.<\/p>

Northern Pygmy Slow Loris (Xanthonycticebus intermedius)<\/strong>
Newly described species based on genetic analysis, originally proposed in 1960 by zoologist Dao Van Tien. Still poorly known and rare. We focus on this species during the Primates of the Karst: 9-Day Tour of Northern Vietnam<\/em> and on private tours<\/a> to Cuc Phuong National Park.<\/p>

Bengal Slow Loris (Nycticebus bengalensis)<\/strong>
Range in Vietnam is not well documented, but this species is reliably seen on Phu Quoc Island off the southwest coast. Only accessible on private custom tours<\/a> to the island.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Northern Pig-tailed Macaque (Macaca leonina)<\/strong>
Relatively common across southern Vietnam, including some scattered populations resulting from released pets and the illegal wildlife trade. Best seen on our Cat Tien Wildlife Tours<\/a>,\u00a0Can Gio Day Tour<\/a>, and custom mammal tours<\/a> in southern Vietnam.<\/p>

Assamese Macaque (Macaca assamensis)<\/strong>
Probably the most difficult macaque species to observe in Vietnam. The nominative subspecies inhabits hill forests above 500m elevation throughout the Annamite Range. We target this species on our Ninh Binh Nature Tour<\/a>,\u00a0Primates of the Karst: 9-Day Tour of Northern Vietnam<\/em>, and private\/custom tours<\/a>.<\/p>

Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta siamica)<\/strong>
Incredibly common, especially around Da Nang in Central Vietnam<\/a>. Present in scattered locations in northern Vietnam as well. Featured on any primate tour in Central Vietnam, including our Red-shanked Douc Langur<\/a> experiences.<\/p>

Common Long-tailed Macaque (Macaca fascicularis fascicularis)<\/strong>
The grey-form mainland subspecies found throughout much of southern Vietnam. Very common and easily observed on our Cat Tien Wildlife Tours<\/a>,\u00a0Can Gio Day Tour<\/a>, and custom southern Vietnam mammal tours<\/a>.<\/p>

Con Dao Long-tailed Macaque (Macaca fascicularis condorensis)<\/strong>
Endemic and vulnerable subspecies restricted to Con Dao Island in the southeastern Mekong. Population numbers are declining but the species remains relatively easy to see on the island. Best viewed on our Wild Con Dao: 4-Day Wildlife Tour<\/em>.<\/p>

Stump-tailed Macaque (Macaca arctoides)<\/strong>
Specialist of dense evergreen forests, occurring up to 2,800m elevation. One of the hardest macaques to see in Vietnam. Occasionally recorded on specialist primate and mammal tours in Central Vietnam<\/a> but specifically targeted on our Primates of Central Vietnam: 7-Day Expedition<\/em>,\u00a0Primates of the Karst: 9-Day Tour of Northern Vietnam<\/em>, and\u00a0Hatinh Langur: 3-Day Primate Conservation Tour<\/em>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Critically Endangered, and Vietnam’s most iconic and visually stunning primate species. It is our most popular primate to search for, often regarded as the country’s signature species. Grey-shanked Douc (Pygathrix cinerea)<\/strong>
Critically Endangered and very difficult to observe in the wild. Found in limited locations in Central Vietnam. Best chances are on our single-day Da Nang tours<\/a>, Kingdom of the Doucs: 2-Day Primate Photography Tour<\/a>, and the Primates of Central Vietnam: 7-Day Expedition<\/em>.<\/p>

Black-shanked Douc (Pygathrix nigripes)<\/strong>
Found in the evergreen forests of southern Vietnam, with the largest populations in Lam Dong Province. Once thought extinct for over 50 years before its rediscovery. Delacour\u2019s Langur (Trachypithecus delacouri<\/em>)<\/strong>
Critically Endangered and endemic to Vietnam. A limestone karst specialist with fewer than 300 individuals remaining. Best seen on our Ninh Binh Nature Tour<\/a>,\u00a0Primates of the Karst: 9-Day Tour of Northern Vietnam<\/em>, and\u00a0Wild Vietnam: Rare Primates & Mammals 2-Week Expedition<\/em>.<\/p>

Cat Ba Langur (Trachypithecus poliocephalus<\/em>)
<\/strong>Critically Endangered and endemic to Cat Ba Island, this species has an estimated wild population of just 80\u2013100 individuals. The langurs are highly sensitive to disturbance, with a significant risk of infanticide triggered by stress. In accordance with Vietnamese law, it is currently illegal to operate tours that target this species. Next Continent has an ongoing relationship with the Cat Ba Langur Conservation Project<\/a> (CBLCP) and fully supports their efforts to protect the species and its habitat. We do not offer tours seeking out this species, both to comply with legislation and to respect the CBLCP\u2019s guidelines and the langur’s vulnerability.<\/p>

Hatinh Langur (Trachypithecus hatinhensis<\/em>)<\/strong>
Endangered and nearly endemic to north-central Vietnam (Quang Binh province), with limited range extending slightly into Laos. We collaborate with the Hatinh Langur Conservation Community (C\u1ed9ng \u0111\u1ed3ng b\u1ea3o t\u1ed3n Vo\u1ecdc G\u00e1y Tr\u1eafng<\/a>)<\/em>\u00a0to view this species ethically. Best seen on our\u00a0Primates of Central Vietnam: 7-Day Expedition<\/em>,\u00a0Hatinh Langur: 3-Day Primate Conservation Tour<\/em>, and\u00a0Primates of the Karst: 9-Day Tour of Northern Vietnam<\/em>.<\/p>

Black Langur (Trachypithecus ebenus<\/em>)<\/strong>
Often treated as a melanistic morph or subspecies of other Trachypithecus<\/em>\u00a0langurs. Occurs in very small numbers in Nui Giang Man Nature Reserve but is virtually impossible to see. We do not currently offer tours targeting this species.<\/p>

Annamese Langur (Trachypithecus margarita<\/em>)<\/strong>
Endangered and inhabits lowland evergreen forests. Rare and difficult to see, with sightings varying by year and season. Most reliably encountered on our 4-Day Primate Tour in Cat Tien<\/a> as well as our general Cat Tien National Park experiences<\/a>, and occasionally seen on bird tours in the Central Highlands.<\/p>

Fran\u00e7ois\u2019 Langur (Trachypithecus francoisi<\/em>)<\/strong>
Endangered species found on limestone outcrops in northern Vietnam and southern China. Access to view this species is currently restricted due to conservation efforts. We do not offer tours targeting this species in Vietnam at this time.<\/p>

Germain\u2019s Langur (Trachypithecus germaini<\/em>)<\/strong>
Endangered but relatively common in appropriate habitat in the Mekong Delta region of southwest Vietnam. Targeted on our Indochinese Silver Langur: 3-Day Photography Expedition<\/em>.<\/p>

Indochinese Grey Langur (Trachypithecus crepusculus<\/em>)<\/strong>
Found west of the Black River in Vietnam, with the largest (but under-surveyed) population likely in Pu Mat National Park. Easier to observe in Laos and Thailand. We do not currently run tours for this species in Vietnam.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Critically Endangered specialist of lowland and lower montane forests. Severely threatened by hunting and habitat loss. Among the hardest primates to observe in Vietnam, though sightings are possible at private locations on our Primates of the Karst: 9-Day Tour of Northern Vietnam<\/em> and on custom private tours<\/a>.<\/p>

Southern White-cheeked Gibbon (<\/strong>Nomascus siki<\/strong><\/em>)<\/strong>
Critically Endangered, with strongholds in Phong Nha\u2013Ke Bang and Pu Mat National Parks. Occasionally encountered in these areas, though sightings are unreliable. We currently only visit by private booking or special request<\/a>.<\/p>

Northern Yellow-cheeked Gibbon (<\/strong>Nomascus annamensis<\/strong><\/em>)<\/strong>
An Annamite Mountain specialist found in broadleaf evergreen and semi-evergreen forest between 550\u20131205 m elevation. A highlight species of our Bach Ma 3-Day Primates & Mammals Tour<\/a> and recorded on private\/custom tours, including work in Nong Son.<\/p>

Southern Yellow-cheeked Gibbon (<\/strong>Nomascus gabriellae<\/strong><\/em>)<\/strong>
The most easily observed gibbon species in Vietnam, with healthy populations in Cat Tien National Park<\/a>. Commonly seen on nearly all Cat Tien tours, especially on our Cat Tien 4-Day Primate & Mammal Watching Tour<\/a> and Explore Cat Tien: Morning with the Gibbons<\/a> experience.<\/p>

Cao Vit (Eastern Black) Gibbon (<\/strong>Nomascus nasutus<\/strong><\/em>)<\/strong>
Critically Endangered and once presumed extinct. Now restricted to evergreen limestone forests in Cao Bang Province<\/em> at 500\u2013930 m elevation. Fewer than 40 individuals remain in Vietnam. We do not run tours for this species due to its extreme sensitivity and ongoing protection by Fauna & Flora International<\/em>.<\/p>

Northern Black-crested Gibbon (<\/strong>Nomascus concolor concolor<\/strong><\/em>)<\/strong>
Critically Endangered and found in semi-evergreen forest between 500\u20133000 m in northern provinces like Son La<\/em> and Yen Bai<\/em>, between the Black and Red Rivers. Fewer than 25 groups are thought to persist in Vietnam.
