Just 150 km northeast of Ho Chi Minh City and 160 km southwest of Da Lat, Cat Tien National Park protects the largest remaining stretch of lowland tropical forest in southern Vietnam. A landscape shaped by history, the park spans an impressive diversity of habitats, from primary and secondary evergreen and semi-evergreen forest to open bamboo thickets, lakes and wetlands, sprawling grasslands and complex river systems. This diversity of environments supports an extraordinary range of wildlife and makes Cat Tien one of the country\u2019s premier destinations for naturalists and wildlife watchers.<\/p>

Cat Tien is home to a remarkable array of species and globally unique biodiversity. It\u2019s one of the few places in Southeast Asia where you can encounter critically endangered primates like Southern Yellow-cheeked Gibbon, Black-shanked Douc Langur, and Annamese Langur, alongside larger mammals such as Gaur, Mainland Leopard Cat, Sunda Pangolin, and (with great luck) some of the last remaining Asian Elephant in Vietnam. Birders are drawn to Cat Tien for its diversity and rarity, with specialties including Orange-necked Partridge, Germain\u2019s Peacock-Pheasant, Green Peafowl, Blyth\u2019s Frogmouth, Great Hornbill, and both Bar-bellied and Blue-rumped Pittas (to name just a small few).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Herping opportunities are just as notable, with around 35% of all Vietnam\u2019s snake species recorded in the park, from the highly sought-after Ruby-eyed Pit Viper to major targets like the Banded Krait and Malayan Krait. The park is also home to an impressive number of rare and endemic species, including the Cat Tien Bent-toed Gecko, Nguyen\u2019s Caecilian, and the Mekong Snail-eating Turtle. Possibly most notably, Cat Tien supports Vietnam\u2019s only remaining population of Siamese Crocodiles, one of the rarest crocodilians in the world.<\/p>

The forest is fantastic and we managed to see all of our target species. \n\n\nOur group were on a birding trip and decided to book the Crocodile Lake trip with the Next Continent team so that we could utilise a local expert for one of our days. It seems obvious, but this was the best decision of our entire trip. Not only do you get to see so much of the park, but if you have a leader like we did (thanks Quy!) you see and learn about so much wildlife. He\u2019s an amazing young man!
